He identifies two distinct attack paths organizations are now facing simultaneously: attacks on AI agents, where the autonomous nature of those agents amplifies the speed and scale of damage when something goes wrong, and attacks by agents, where threat actors use AI to generate polymorphic malware, automate entire ransomware kill chains, and launch phishing campaigns sophisticated enough that grammar errors are no longer a reliable tell. His response to that reality is not to simply add more tools. Matthew: Matthew Connor here, host of the Cyber Business Podcast. Today we're joined by Sinan Al Taie, Cybersecurity Manager at Master Electronics. Sinan, welcome to the show.

And now back to our show. Sinan, for those who aren't familiar, can you tell us about Master Electronics and your role there as Cybersecurity Manager?
Sinan: Sure. Master Electronics is a leading global authorized distributor of electronic components. They've been in the business for more than half a century. It's a family-owned company that has remained focused on strong relationships, responsive service, and added value. Matthew: I love it. Your superpower, as I believe you've referred to it, is in cybersecurity strategy. I'd love to dive into that because it's such a relevant and important topic these days. What makes that your superpower, and what really gets you excited about it?
Sinan: It's my journey with Master Electronics, honestly. Before I joined, I was in infrastructure as a database engineer with the United Nations and USAID missions. After that, I transitioned to cybersecurity — and the reason was personal. I was hacked. I was a victim, and being in the IT industry, I started asking how that happened. That curiosity led me to a professional development program at Northeastern Illinois University, where I made the transition to cybersecurity. After that, I did a couple of penetration testing engagements, then joined Master Electronics as a cybersecurity analyst. I grew with the company, and what I love is the exposure I got to building a security posture end to end — seeing where we started and where we are now. That's my superpower: being a strategist for building security postures.
Matthew: I love it. AI is finally at a place where we're seeing some really exciting things. Darktrace, for example — I think they're a fantastic company. The way they use AI is so intelligent that it gives you a glimpse of where AI takes us in the future when it comes to cybersecurity. Unlike so many security products that just bolt an LLM onto a traditional product and call it "AI-powered," Darktrace uses the right kind of machine learning for the right purpose — whether that's email security, network security, or OT. As a cybersecurity strategist, what should people be looking at and doing when it comes to AI and their cybersecurity strategy?
Sinan: Thank you, Matthew. AI has done great things for us. But from a cybersecurity perspective, we focus on the risks that AI inclusion in the workflow can introduce — and on applying the right controls, monitoring, alerts, and automated responses.
In general, AI inclusion brings automation and autonomy to workflows, and that drives us toward two paths of AI agent risk.
The first is attacks on agents. Agents are autonomous and designed to amplify production — but that also makes them risk amplifiers. If something bad happens, it happens at a speed and scale that a human simply cannot match, because the agent is designed to access everything in its toolkit. A clear example is zero-click attacks — email-based attacks that require no human interaction. If an AI agent isn't designed, controlled, or implemented correctly to handle zero-click attacks, it can cause enormous damage at a speed no human defender can match.
The second path is attacks by agents. We've seen phishing attacks increase significantly through the use of AI agents — you can no longer rely on spotting grammar errors in a phishing email. Malware is becoming more polymorphic, changing its behavior and signatures in real time. The bad guys can now use AI to generate numerous malware samples against their targets. And ransomware — the entire attack chain is now being automated, from delivering the malware, to encrypting data, to sending the ransom message, to collecting payment. The whole system is automated. Attackers' skill levels keep rising while the effectiveness of defenders keeps falling. With one click of a button through ransomware-as-a-service, the full kill chain runs automatically. That's the second path.
Matthew: Thinking back to the zero-click example — I think we're in a really interesting moment where so many legacy tools are still being used. When the bad guys use AI to circumvent traditional filters and signatures, that's where AI has to fight back. Your email has to be protected by an advanced AI system that's smart enough to catch a zero-click attack before it ever reaches your inbox, rather than relying on traditional filtering.
Sinan: Well said. There are two paths we're facing now in the industry. The traditional path — which we shouldn't call legacy, because it's still valid — is the standard attack path, and we do have security postures to defend against it. The other path is the AI attack path, and that's what everyone is talking about.
Within the AI attack path, threats can go in specific directions. On top of polymorphic malware in real time, there are prompt injections. And there's something we've always known about, even before cyber threat intelligence was a defined field: identity. Agents deployed in a workflow need permissions to perform their assigned tasks — and those agents can create other agents. So now we're facing a whole new layer of identity-related issues because of AI inclusion in the environment.
The solution isn't just adding another tool. We call it the defender's dilemma. As defenders, we need to be 100% correct on our responses, actions, and decisions — every time. The bad guys just need to get lucky once. So what we need is agentic cyber defense. It's not about adding another tool — it's about deploying autonomous agents that can reason, investigate, and act alongside our team, running in parallel with traditional security tools.
Matthew: Do you see that as an AI agent running locally on the desktop to defend at the endpoint level, or an AI agent that assists cybersecurity professionals in doing their job — or both?
Sinan: It includes all of that, and it depends on the company's infrastructure — what they have on-premises, what they have in the cloud. But in general, we've all grown up with the layered approach — defense in depth. On top of that traditional layered defense system, we have tools that trigger when any layer is breached, whether on a signature or anomaly basis. The agentic AI runs alongside the team, and broadly speaking, it finds the things traditional tools can't.
For example, the attacker dwell time was reduced from 197 minutes in 2020 to between 7 and 9 minutes during the MGM attack — and that was before the AI attack path even existed in the industry. Then in the cyber incidents of late 2025, using an AI attack path, it took just 77 seconds. No human defender can respond in 77 seconds. That's why we need to include agentic agents running in parallel with existing security posture and teams — looking for the small micro-processes that won't trigger traditional tools, but when compiled, constitute a full attack. That's what changed in late 2025.
Matthew: I'm right there with you. We're in a transitional stage — moving from traditional non-AI tools that people are used to, toward AI-powered tools. When placed properly — going back to Darktrace, for example — you've got AI working across endpoint, network, OT, and email security in the right way. Not as a fully autonomous agent, because we're still in a fairly immature stage with AI. You can't just give an AI agent unfettered access to everything. Have you seen what's happening with Open Claw? People are giving it full access and running into all kinds of trouble because they're not security experts and they've set it up with very broad permissions. I think the future is very specific, well-governed AI tools that eventually mature into true AI agents. But right now, we need those tools to be precise and carefully implemented.
Sinan: It's very exciting — and honestly, we don't fully know where we're heading. But what we do know is that new capabilities are being added constantly. AGI is coming, quantum computing is coming — sooner than expected. Solutions are being planned and designed. But as a conclusion for where we are now: AI needs to be deployed with wide eyes open. That's the key takeaway.
Matthew: That's very accurate. You have to be very careful and thoughtful about what you give it access to and the instructions you give it. Have you gotten to play with Claude's Cowork yet? There's a lot of power there, but what I like — unlike Open Claw — is that Cowork has guardrails built in. It doesn't have unfettered access by default. It asks permission. You can give it access to your Chrome browser, and it can go do things you tell it to — your LinkedIn, your bank, whatever it is. And it's mind-blowing to watch it think through problems, even find workarounds when it hits obstacles. This is a fascinating time.
Sinan: It really is fascinating. But from a cybersecurity perspective, you can't imagine our concerns. Even something like a prompt injection from a bad actor could wipe an entire OneDrive if the agent has full access. That's what we call excessive privilege or privilege escalation. Most AI agents are being designed with minimum permissions — but even then, implementers should do a second or third review to make sure critical assets and crown jewels of the company are not accessible to AI agents that are just meant to speed up production workflows.
Matthew: And I think it's easy to assume the agent is really thinking. It seems logical, it seems deliberate — and in a way, it kind of is. But ultimately, it's the world's most advanced autocomplete. It's figuring things out and applying that to what it's doing and seeing. We're not at AGI level yet, where it can recognize and reject a prompt injection as garbage. Right now it just fills in the next step. It can't think in the way we imagine it does. Where do you think things go from here — especially given that you mentioned both AGI and quantum computing? I'm not sure what jobs look like after AGI.
Sinan: We will still have jobs, because even superhuman AGI — instead of doing actions one at a time like current agents — will be doing hundreds of thousands simultaneously. The production output will be extraordinary. A good analogy: think about how DDoS attacks have been largely neutralized. Before, we were facing them constantly. With machine learning, traffic can now be easily identified as real or robotic. Similarly, when superhuman AGI agents exist, there will be solutions — and our job as researchers and practitioners is to anticipate where the industry is heading and how to defend it. It works both ways.
And I published this about a year and a half ago, and I'll repeat it: AI will not take anyone's job, but people who know how to use AI will replace those who don't. I used the self-driving car example — the Waymo. The relationship between a car and a driver used to be one-to-one. With machine learning and self-driving, it's now one-to-many. A fleet of cars is orchestrated by one person — who, for the record, should still know how to drive. I think the future is more about orchestration. AI won't replace subject matter experts, because there is no 100% outcome without hallucination. That's also one of the main reasons AGI is still delayed — the two blockers are compute power and alignment. As much as the biological human brain is being translated into AGI, that includes the misalignment of normal human responses. So it's concerning and interesting. We don't fully know what we're getting or when AGI will arrive.
Matthew: So is your position that even after AGI — this true superintelligence in a robot with all the world's knowledge, able to act in the physical world — we'll still have jobs?
Sinan: Yes, because that superhuman AGI, instead of one action at a time, will be doing hundreds of thousands simultaneously. The production output will be on a completely different scale. And just like DDoS attacks were solved — when those superhuman AGI agents exist, there will be solutions built around them. That's our job as researchers and advocates: to go day in and day out figuring out where the industry is heading and how to defend it. It goes both ways.
Matthew: I certainly think we have quite a long way to go. Some say a few years, others say up to ten years before AGI becomes real. And some believe we'll never fully get there — that computers will never truly think like humans, that it'll look like it but never achieve consciousness. My own take is that if it iterates enough times, it may just happen organically — just like biological evolution. Iterate enough times and something that can think just emerges. But wherever you fall on that debate, we have a significant period between now and then. And your point stands: it's about the people who know how to use AI versus those who don't. There's no reason to resist it. Everyone should be jumping in with both feet.
Microsoft did a fascinating internal study on Copilot adoption. They found that early adopters loved it, but about 75-80% of people used it for a week or two and then stopped entirely. When they dug into why, the finding was telling: effectively using AI requires managerial skills, not just tool-use skills. If you approach it like you would Google, you get frustrated and quit. If you approach it like managing an intern — guiding it, correcting it, teaching it — you become a power user. Those people use it all day every day and get great results.
Sinan: That's the amplifier factor at work. Every business needs to stay competitive and needs to fast-forward their operations to compete. AI will be used by everyone. But the subject matter experts are going to be the ones with the key interaction with these AI systems in every company. It's a step up. The transition will be a step up — subject matter experts orchestrating their AI agents in their field to get amplified, fast results that support the business.
Matthew: And interestingly, those subject matter experts will need managerial skills more than ever — because now they're managing a team of AI agents, not just running code themselves. That's a big shift for people in IT who are used to getting their hands dirty. We geeks love the technical work. But those things are slowly going away. Now it's more about telling Claude Code or Cowork or Gemini, "Take a look at this script and tell me where I've gone wrong." It's more managerial than it used to be. And that means soft skills — human-to-human skills — are never going away. We went through a phase where people thought, "Just be a coder, work in a dark room, no one needs to talk to you." That's not going to work anymore because AI codes better than you. You need people skills and managerial skills. I think those are the two most important skill sets for every worker going forward.
Sinan: Outside of the cyber realm, I think AI will fundamentally change education — both how students learn and how academic institutions teach. That's my personal prediction. I also think AI will transform the music industry and will be used heavily in marketing. And going back to developers: the senior subject matter experts will be the ones reviewing and validating code, because you cannot rely 100% on AI-generated code. It needs to be validated before going into production.
Matthew: I totally agree. I don't think it'll be a junior developer writing code in the traditional sense anymore. If you're in school studying development, your job is going to be how to manage AI and leverage it in your coding. You need to go in being able to think through why something will be a problem, how it integrates into the existing codebase, and step up from there. The role is evolving.
Sinan: And human interaction is still going to be needed. I want to be clear: AI won't replace humans — it will reduce the number of humans needed in certain workflows because of the support of virtual agents. I was at a conference recently where the keynote speaker asked the audience, "How many of you have given your AI agents an employee number?" That's where we're heading. Everything is changing. But as of now, sophisticated human review of any AI output is still required before anything goes into production. That said, AI inclusion will absolutely fast-forward every company's production and outcomes. Our job as security practitioners is to implement it with wide eyes open.
Matthew: Those are wise words and I think they're 100% accurate. We're seeing early glimpses of this with CrowdStrike and SentinelOne — both have implemented AI to help analysts understand what an alert means. It speeds things up and gives you insights you might have missed. That's cool, and it's a glimpse of the future.
And on the security side — the reality is you have to start using AI to defend. It blows my mind that organizations are still using legacy email security gateways. The reason you still see floods of fake DocuSign emails getting through is that those gateways can't identify them as malicious — they're coming from a legitimate URL, a legitimate DocuSign link, that just happens to take you somewhere bad. The bad guys keep tweaking their approach daily, and legacy tools keep playing catch-up. That game of whack-a-mole doesn't work. We see the evidence in the billions of dollars flowing into cybercrime every year. Cybersecurity professionals really need to lean into AI and adopt it as quickly as possible.
And end user training — I've long argued that Jane in accounting is great at accounting and isn't expected to be a cybersecurity expert. Historically we've had to train end users, but the technology should now be doing that heavy lifting. If your email gateway is letting things through that shouldn't get through, that's a technology problem — not a user problem. We're now at the point where that's a realistic expectation.
Sinan: I'm 100% in agreement on AI inclusion in cybersecurity defense across the board. And for small and medium companies that can't afford enterprise solutions — the inclusion of AI features in SaaS tools, like EDR platforms with AI-powered correlation, puts them in a far better place than relying on legacy endpoint protection. We're growing with the flow, and it will continue to evolve. Every day is a different day for a cybersecurity practitioner. We learn something new and we act on it. Our ideal is to be proactive and 100% correct. But even when a threat actor gets lucky, we need to make the right decisions on how to respond.
I've developed a concept that runs parallel to defense in depth — I call it detection in depth. The goal is to be 100% right every time, but if one layer is breached, you need to have the right detection and response on that layer. That requires understanding both the infrastructure and the specific business. The data workflow in every company is different. There's no one-size-fits-all standardization. So it comes down to understanding each environment and providing the right detection on each layer — because there is no silver bullet.
Matthew: Well said. That really is the cybersecurity professional's job — to layer it and understand the right response at each level. Until the day comes where one flawless AI agent can stand guard at the gateway and protect everything, we have to take that layered, strategic approach. And as much as I advocate for reducing the burden on the end user, they're still part of the layered defense — the weakest link in the chain. The goal is to support them with technology, make their job easier, and set them up for success.
Sinan: I call them the human firewall. They are the last layer of defense. Even with the most sophisticated AI and detection-in-depth approach, there's still a percentage that depends on the cyber awareness of the user — minimal now, but still present. And when something new emerges — like the shift from click-fix to file-fix to consent-fix attacks in 2025, or threat actors exploiting the clipboard — users do need to be aware. The threat actors are constantly adapting, trying to lure users in new ways. But ultimately, social engineering is the one vector that no tool can fully eliminate. If a user gets socially engineered and walks a thumb drive into the building — no technology stops that. Which is why policies and procedures still matter alongside all the layers.
Matthew: Exactly. Policies and procedures are critical. Companies are still struggling with wire fraud from simple business email compromise — but if the right policies are in place and people follow them, it doesn't matter that someone's email was compromised. That's why we have layers. Technology, policies, procedures, end users — it all works together.
